Amber Pendants Through History

Pendants are one of the oldest forms of personal adornment. Long before chains and clasps, amber was drilled and strung on leather cords — worn close to the body as protection, status, and connection to nature.

From Stone Age amulets to Viking-age trading beads, amber pendants have traveled the Amber Roads across Europe for thousands of years. Thor's Hammer, carved from Baltic amber, was worn as a symbol of strength and protection. Heart shapes have carried meaning across cultures and centuries. The material itself — warm, light, and glowing — made amber a natural choice for something worn near the heart.

At Ravgaard, most of our pendants are shaped by hand in our workshop in Sønderlev — and all are selected with the same care for the material and the craftsmanship behind it.

Different Styles of Amber Pendants

Amber pendants come in many expressions — from minimal and modern to sculptural and one-of-a-kind.

Silver tube pendants are among our most distinctive designs. Instead of a traditional bail, the amber slides onto a sleek sterling silver tube — a contemporary detail that lets the stone take center stage. Perfect for chunkier chains.

Hand-turned bail pendants feature a classically shaped sterling silver bail, crafted by hand in our workshop. A timeless setting that works with most chain styles and lets the amber speak for itself.

Gold bail pendants pair the warmth of amber with hand-turned 14k or 18k gold. A refined combination that works equally well for everyday wear and special occasions.

Heart pendants are a perennial favorite — shaped from a single piece of amber, often with a polished front and raw back that reveals the stone's natural depth and contrast.

Symbolic pendants — such as Thor's Hammer on a leather cord — connect the material to its Nordic roots. Simple, meaningful, and made entirely from natural elements.

While amber is often the centerpiece, not all our pendants follow that rule. Some designs place the metal at the forefront — with amber appearing as a quiet, warm detail rather than the main event. A subtle presence that still carries the character of the stone.

No two pendants are ever identical. The amber itself determines the final expression — its tone, inclusions, and inner glow are never the same twice.

Looking for something truly personal? We also create custom pendants to order — whether you have a specific design in mind, a piece of raw amber you've found yourself, or an existing piece that needs repair or a new expression. Reach out via the chat and tell us what you have in mind — Christine will get back to you personally.

Caring for amber jewelry

Amber is a natural resin — warm, light, and sensitive to chemicals and heat. To keep your piece looking its best:

  • Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, and cleaning products
  • Remove jewelry before swimming or bathing
  • Store in a soft pouch or box, away from direct sunlight
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth
  • If the surface becomes dull, a drop of olive oil on a cloth can restore its natural warmth.

With the right care, amber jewelry lasts a lifetime — and often improves with age. For a deeper guide, visit our [Care Guide] page.

Craftsmanship at Ravgaard

Our family has worked with amber for 4 generations, over the past 100 years.

The story began on the island of Læsø, where the North Sea and the Kattegat meet — one of Denmark's richest shores for finding amber. But as my father Erik moved to Jutland, my parents Margit and Erik Ravgård have spent the past 45 years running their open workshop and store in Sønderlev, between Hjørring and Lønstrup in northern Denmark.

In the workshop, Erik transforms raw amber into unique jewelry of his own design — polishing, shaping, and setting each stone by hand. The workshop is also equipped with wood lathes, where Erik turns wood of all kinds into beautiful bowls and Christmas trees with amber details. Margit brings her own eye for design and detail to every piece.

We work exclusively with genuine Nordic amber, also known as Baltic amber, formed by ancient trees and shaped over millions of years in earth and sea. No two pieces are ever the same — their colors, inclusions, surface textures, and inner glow vary naturally from piece to piece. Our role is not to control the material, but to work with it slowly, intentionally, and with care for its natural expression.

We believe in slow craftsmanship and jewelry made to last.

We are a small family run business, and we are proud to be.

If you have any questions, you are always welcome to reach out via the chat — you will receive a personal reply from me, Christine, the 4th generation.

Thank you for supporting Danish craftsmanship.
